Mike, I'm currently feasting on the Zatoichi series of films, Shintaro Katsu is my 2nd favourite actor after Toshiro Mifune

Re: Favourite Coen Bros movie
many of his films are gratuitous, but compared to a lot of recent western horror at least most of his stuff is in context to a story unlike a lot of the over the top ultra violent shit put out by american studios

Always meant to mention it.

I don't know him well but when it was younger I was really into the Sega Yakuza games. And Takashi Miike did a movie in 2007 (Ryû ga gotoku: Gekijô-ban).

Goro Majima is a great character played by Gorô Kishitani (and by Mark Hammill in the awful English dub of Yazuka 1)

It also starred Jennifer Jason Leigh who was so good in that she stole the show from the great Paul Newman - which is no mean feat

Re: Favourite Coen Bros movie
that Buster Scruggs film, I loved most of it but the opening musical story & the wagon train one stood out. I still wonder if the dog came back :.)

All well above average. That's the problem in choosing.

A Serious Man is bleak but brilliant. Seemed to go under the radar.

The newish Ballad Of Buster Scruggs is very smart short storytelling. Condensed tales that are a rollercoaster of comedy and pathos. And look better than probably anything else they've done.

As long as they make movies, I will be in the queue.

I love Burn afterReading but it’s no where near The Big Lebowski.

Some people don’t like their humour. I think it’s what really makes them exceptional.

Loads of people can do violence.

Re: Favourite Coen Bros movie
ioc, severely gone off clooney in recent years but agree, he's brilliant in their films. a few people have said they hate burn after reading, I think it's superb :.)

The only writers of mainstream films/tv I like more are Mamet and Sorkin.

Barton Fink was the first film of theirs I saw. I was gobsmacked at how it made me think differently. Rare for any film I’d seen previously.
However, it’s no where near the most enjoyable. Just brilliant.

Not a character actor but I can even deal with Clooney in their stuff.

True, I just could not get past Robbins, never watched Shawshank because of it.

On topic - I liked Barton Fink. Sometime writers writing about writers can be naval-gazing to the extreme (I am looking at your Charlie Kaufman) but it was well done.
